School Improvement

In 2002, Greenwood Elementary was presented with the opportunity to apply for the Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) Grant, which was available to high-poverty, low-achieving schools.  Greenwood was a school which had received a ìLowî Rating on the 2002 Oregon School Report Card.

After receiving this grant in 2003, Greenwood then launched into the excitement of school reform.  One of the requirements of this CSR grant was that participating schools select an External Model Provider.  Greenwood researched several possibilities before deciding on Different Ways of Knowing (DWOK), because of its social studies and art base.

After two DWOK  coaches were selected, identified areas of need, such as Year-long Curriculum Planning, were addressed in a way that was flexible, yet goal-oriented.  Coaches Annie Painter and Mary Crouse continue to be involved in the school improvement process.

Though the process of school improvement is tedious and forever ongoing, it has created a wealth of information for students, parents, teachers, and staff.
